Scribe

Eric Raymond’s work questions the origin of images. As part of a larger project, called Lighthouses, his project, Scribe, ‘consists of miniature robots embedded with radio-wave receivers whose cartographic inscriptions are based on an interpretation of non-visual sources.’ The information is processed and becomes the means for robotic production of drawings. In turn, the ‘information is derived from cellular phones, television broadcast signals, solar storm waves and other local natural emissions. The result is a complex and detailed "map" superimposing multiple levels of imperceptible, electronic realities that occur simultaneously at any given time in any given space.’

See also the Canadian site of Interaccess at http://www.interaccess.org/exhibitions/index.php?id=39. This site is dedicated to electronic media art and describes Raymond’s Scribe as: ‘a poetic illustration of new landscapes transformed by technology and Raymond’s ongoing investigation into the interdependency between images, ideas and objects.’

Spam Architecture

The images from the Spam Architecture series are generated by a computer program that accepts as input, junk email. Various patterns, keywords and rhythms found in the text are translated into three-dimensional modeling gestures.

Raumstaben

The site, "Raumstaben" (a hybrid word made from the German words "Raum"=space and "-staben" as in "Buchstaben"=letters), is devoted to exploring the possible dimension of written code, principally the alphabet and letters. The site thus tampers with one of the fundamentals for communication and processes this through various types of transformations in space and time with the help of computer modelling. The result is at times sculptural, at times cinematic , and in most cases both fascinating and profound.

The site offers a list of projects with images and videos; it is only in German.

Aether Induction House

Aether Induction House is an experimental architecture project consisting of three prototypes. Dealing with mediated spaces, existences and space interpretations. Focusing on transforming the primarily visual digital environment into a physical and tactile experience, finding an architectural and tectonic embodiment. Have computers and software been promoted to the role of “assistants”, tools that have important effects on the design? Or what are the perspectives and limitations of such servo mechanisms? Autonomous architecture? Building printers? Widespread solutions offered by software guides and wizards? The disappearance of the architect, or its role shifting to the design of algorithms that are able to figure out creative solutions without human intervention?

The website shows the development of these prototypes in detail, with excessive material in photographs, diagrams, and to some extents texts. Project developed by Aether Architecture.

Reconfigurable House

The Reconfigurable House is an environment constructed from thousands of low tech components that can be "rewired" by visitors. The project is a critique of ubiquitous computing "smart homes", which are based on the idea that technology should be invisible to prevent DIY. Smart homes actually aren’t very smart simply because they are pre-wired according to algorithms and decisions made by designers of the systems, rather than the people who occupy the houses. In contrast to such homes, which are not able to adapt structurally over time, the many sensors and actuators of Reconfigurable House can be reconnected endlessly as people change their minds so that the House can take on completely new behaviours.

Reconfigurable house is open to the public in Tokyo, Japan until March 2008 as part of NTT ICC 10th anniversary celebrations, curated by Yukiko Shikata. It was built by Usman Haque and Adam Somlai-Fischer, as part of a continuous exploration of the potential of low-tech off the shelf products, and issues of open source development.

Cocoon

Cocoon – an antistress concept by Jennie Pinneus. The cocoons are intended to provide a simple and accessible solution to shelter us from a stressful, intense environment filled with impressions.
They should be used in public spaces, where pressure is high and where it’s difficult to escape and take a break.

Refuge Wear City Interventions

Lucy Orta’s work examines the social bonds within communities and the relationships between individuals and their environments. In the early 1990s, Orta began a series of works called "Refuge Wear" that combined architecture, fashion and social activism. This series took the form of tent-like mobile structures that transform into items of clothing, sleeping bags and bivouacs. Orta envisioned these as emergency structures for nomadic populations, for the homeless and for crisis situations such as earthquake zones. Orta’s work has since grown to incorporate interdisciplinary workshops, contemporary dance and other actions that explore notions of identity, shared space and networking. These projects include collaborations with such marginalized groups as the unemployed, the homeless and immigrants. Her recent series of works entitled "Modular Architecture" and "Nexus Architecture", continue this theme of objects which are more symbolic that practically useful. The "Nexus Architecture" series has taken many forms, including boiler suit-like garments which are worn by multiple participants. The suits are joined by "umbilical" structures connecting one person’s stomach to another’s back and represent the social links between people.

RE:MARK & Hidden Worlds of Noise and Voice

"The Hidden Worlds of Noise and Voice is an interactive audiovisual installation, or, alternatively, an augmented-reality speech-visualization system."

"RE:MARK is an installation for two participants which likewise presents an interactive visualization of its users’ speech. Unlike Hidden Worlds, which primarily attends to the noiselike aspects of vocal sounds, RE:MARK shifts this inquiry towards the more symbolic domain of the spoken and written word."

messa di voce - placing the voice

"Messa di Voce (Ital., »placing the voice«) is an audiovisual performance in which the speech, shouts and songs produced by two abstract vocalists are radically augmented in real-time by custom interactive visualization software. The performance touches on themes of abstract communication, synaesthetic relationships, cartoon language, and writing and scoring systems, within the context of a sophisticated, playful, and virtuosic audiovisual narrative."

Parasite - moving graffiti

Parasite is a mobile projection system which, attached to a subway train, projects images and writings on the tube surface.
"Making use of Parasite — allow you a glimpse into a different world full of surrealist imagery"

L.A.S.E.R. Tag - temporarily vandalism

"In its simplest form the Laser Tag system is a camera and laptop setup, tracking a green laser point across the face of a building and generating graphics based on the laser’s position which then get projected back onto the building with a high power projector."

visual complexity

"VisualComplexity.com intends to be a unified resource space for anyone interested in the visualization of complex networks. The project’s main goal is to leverage a critical understanding of different visualization methods, across a series of disciplines, as diverse as Biology, Social Networks or the World Wide Web"

Interactive Tree - Tisch ITP

An environment where the virtual and physical realities merge. A ‘pixelated’ 3D version of a tree using small cubes and plastic-etched leaves. In the piece, the physical tree is represented using the virtual building blocks of pixels while the virtual one is represented using a patch that takes visuals from a camera, and projects a transformed image onto the tree. This image will allow a viewer to interact with the tree through his/her virtual projected image. This visual experience is possible only from one specific location, where the viewer is able to notice the shape of the tree, as well as be projected onto the scene. From all other positions the image of the tree will not be comprehended.

Urban Tapestries

Urban Tapestries is an experimental software platform for knowledge mapping and sharing – public authoring. It combines mobile and internet technologies with geographic information systems to allow people to build relationships between places and to associate stories, information, pictures, sounds and videos with them.
